The Yorkshire Open Championships Results
Quest Taekwondo, which run Taekwondo Martial Arts and Olympic Sparring sessions in the Bradford, Leeds, Penistone and Liverpool areas, hosted the 'Yorkshire Open Sparring Championships' at Richard Dunn Sports Centre, with British Taekwondo, the National Governing Body for Olympic Taekwondo in Great Britain.
A host of clubs totalling 270 competitors from across the country participated in the team competition, which Quest Taekwondo themselves had 37 of its own competitors participate in the event.
Of the 36 participating clubs, Quest Taekwondo finished 1st overall - with 11 Gold, 8 Silver and 11 Bronze medals, with a team score of 112 points, ahead of 2nd place Liverpool Academy (98 points) and 3rd place Team Ultimate (Doncaster, 42 points).
The competitors were coached by Master Mike McKenzie (Penistone), Rick Simpson (Bradford), Oliver Thornton (Bradford), Karl Mann (Leeds), Ashley Nicholas (Liverpool) and Joanne Lawson (Liverpool).
Competing for Quest were kids as young as 6 and adults, the eldest being 42. Notable performances were from:
Jamie Kidd, 10 from Silsden, who defeated Daniel Ocego from Liverpool Academy 12-2 in the Quarter Final, defeated Daniel Brown of Scorpion Taekwondo (Doncaster) 12-8 in the Semi Final, and defeated Ibrahim Hussain from Hadri Taekwondo (London) 14-1 in the final. Jamie Coach Rick Simpson added "the scores don't look it but these weren't poor opposition he was playing against, these were top class competitors - Jamie was really focussed putting his disappointment from Scotland behind him".
Zak Spencer, 8 from Baildon, who emphatically defeated 4 opponents to claim his 2nd Gold in successive competitions. Coach Simpson added "It's as though everything has come together since Zak's disappointment at the British National Championships where he lost to the eventual Silver medallist in the quarter final - he's been training his backside off to improve his kicking range and accuracy - and it's clearly paid off!".
Jake Barnett, 16 from Baildon, won Gold after defeating Oliver Spencer from Stoke UTA in the semi final and a dramatic last-second kick won it for Jake in the final against Jamie Wright from Sport TKD Plymouth. Coach Simpson is pleased with Jake's record breaking year, with Jake picking up medals as well as experience on his way.
Kieran Young, 18 from Bradford, got off to a great start with his new club Quest Taekwondo by convincingly defeating Mahdi Rezai from TKD Machine (Manchester), despite Kieran's opponent being over a foot taller he was still able to land head kicks on his opponent to win in style. Simpson added "Kieran is a top class player and we're looking forward to him competing in Europe next year".
Daniel Sparkes, 11 from Greengates, also won Gold, his 3rd in successive championships. Daniel defeated team mate Liam Exley, 10 from Shipley. Daniel's coach Karl Mann added that he is looking forward to seeing Daniel in action at the Children's international championships in Germany in 2013.
Ellie Bowden, 11 from Cullingworth, rounded off an excellent season with her 3rd medal in as many competitions. Ellie won Bronze at the British National Championships in September, and emphatically won Gold at the Scottish Cup 2 weeks ago. Ellie defeated Stevie Grady
