Quest Taekwondo at the British National Championships 2014

This year Quest Taekwondo took a strong team of 18 to the British National Championships 2014, which were held at Manchester Velodrome on the 20th and 21st of September.

The team were in good spirits and feeling confident for the weekend ahead.  As is often the case for teams at a major championships, there were disappointments and near-misses as well as amazing performances and triumphs.  Overall, we were very pleased with Quest athlete performances, with every medal hard-fought.

There were so many great performances, but some stand-out notable achievements. We need to start off with Daniel Moody, our new -41kg Cadet British Champion.  Finding yourself opposite your team mate in the final of the most important competition of the year is not an easy situation to be in.  However, both Daniel and his teammate, Alex Foster, fought at their best in their earlier matches to find themselves head-to-head in the final. In the end, it was Daniel Moody that took the Gold Medal and title, with Alex bringing home the Silver medal.  Well done to both.

Worthy of a big shout out are our National Championship first-timers. After relatively little ring-time, it is a daunting prospect to be faced with such a big competition arena.  Some went out in earlier matches, but all should be applauded for their various first Championship achievements.  However, Amber Carroll provided a most exciting semi-final match that had us all on the edges of our seats.  With barely ever more than a couple of points between them throughout the first two rounds, it was Amber’s continued determination and persistence that took her into the final with a score of 18-17.  In the end her final match opponent was stronger, but she put on an amazing performance to earn a silver medal.

And sometimes the medal achieved does not always tell of the hard-fought battle to get there.  For Jacob Barnett this was his first National Championships as a senior.  His final medal colour was bronze, and he earned this after progressing through 4 amazing matches in the -68kg senior category. A major achievement for Jake’s first National Championships in his new senior category.

To summarise:

Gold Medal for Daniel Moody

Silver medals for Rebecca Weir, Ellie Foster, Alex Foster, Josh Tickle, Amber Carroll.

Bronze medals for Demi Molloy, Shane Burgin, Holly Ullyott, Kevin Booth, Jacob Barnett and Luke Jones.

Megan Featherstone, Harriet Akeroyd, Liam Burdock, Leo Martin, Oliver Leicester, Aimee Hill and Ellis Kirk went out in the preliminaries after some tough early matches.

As a team we placed 7th Advanced Athletes and 10th overall, out of 69 teams.

A fantastic weekend for Quest Taekwondo, and all players, coaches and parents should be extremely proud.  Richard Ullyott was on referee duty, Karl Mann providing match photography, and our team physio, Victoria Chapman, completed the team for the weekend.  Well done all ….
