In October 2014 Quest Taekwondo hosted it’s first Open Championships in Sheffield since Chief Instructor, Mike McKenzie, returned from his role in the 2012 Olympic Games. His aim was to begin the process of incorporating some of the successful elements of the Olympic Taekwondo event into club level competitions. The envisaged outcome was for an improved experience for club teams, individual athletes, referees and spectators.
For the first time at this level the rings were adapted to the new Octagonal shape. All matches were played on Daedo PSS, which offered the Peewee classes an opportunity to experience competition on an equal footing to their Cadet, Junior and Senior level team mates. The best UK referees were invited, with each ring being managed by an International level referee. An ample athlete warm-up area was provided and an orderly athlete waiting area was managed by officials.
Teams from most of the UK’s top clubs attended, despite the event being so soon after the British National Championships. The Championships went smoothly and much thanks must go to the Quest member and parent volunteers as well as to all the teams and spectators that attended the event. Special thanks for a smoothly run competition must also go Mark Needham as Event Manager on the day. The referees and spectators were rewarded with superb matches, great sporting spirit, and a great day of competition. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies were awarded to the winning athletes at the end of the day. All athletes went home with a Quest Taekwondo Certificate of Achievement and we hope happy memories of positive experience. The 1st Place Team Trophy went to Scorpion Taekwondo following great performances throughout the day.
It was clear that things were going well when Master McKenzie could be heard planning next year’s championships, “Very proud of the Quest Taekwondo Open Championships 2014 …. 2015's will be timed better so as not to be too close to the Nationals. Top class venue at the EIS Sheffield, Octagonal Rings, the best UK Referees, all PSS matches, Great teams, athletes and supporters and great event staff - volunteers from Quest Taekwondo members and parents. I'm so pleased and grateful to everyone for making it special”.
